and vice versa?

My Peruvian friend doesn’t mind if she gets mistaken for Cuban, Argentinian, or Puetro Rican, but gets really pissed if someone mistakens her for a Mexican. And that seems to happen alot with the Spanish kids at my school…

Just Curious but why?

well that’s like calling an african american jamaican..or chinese japanese or white person with black hair latino..its just not right to do it

Dumbass. Spanish people are from Spain. Peruvians are from peru, cubans are from cuba, argentinians from Argentina etc. But the real Spanish do hate being compared to south americans because they are not the same.

Could only mean one thing and that is she feels like she is a cut above Mexicans. She is narrowminded and a racist. She doesn’t see that we are all bros and sisters here.

  5. cbrownie says:

There is a hierarchy (for lack of better terms) amongst Latinos and as you can probably guess, Mexicans aren’t high up.

I’m not sure why this caste system exists but I’m American. We try to look down on racism in this country and see it as a fault, but in reality racism is live and healthy everywhere else. In other places of the world it’s not always a matter of race but region that can raise people’s hairs. That’s why uppity Peruvians don’t want to mistaken for dirty Mexicans. It’s an insult.

But then again maybe it’s just annoying to your friend. I’m Asian and hate being called Chinese because it’s so ignorant. Not every slant-eye is Chinese just as not every Latino/a is Mexican.

well, I don’t know why they get upset, but Spanish people are white Europeans with a very different background,so possibly that’s why.

The Spanish have very little in common with Mexicans. They don’t look similar, they speak completely different (same language but completely different, they don’t act the same.

If you mistook a Frenchman for a German he’d be angry, a Scot for an Englishman etc. Europe has a very long and often bitter history. They no longer hate each other but they consider themselves very distinct from one another. I am Irish and I personally don’t care if someone mistakes for English because my mother is and it rubs off on me. If you said that to a different Irish person there is a good chance they would be angry, not because they have a problem with the English (they don’t anymore, despite common assumption, we really like them) but because we have very different histories and cultures.

Your Peruvian friend is not Spanish. The only Spanish people are from Spain and they do not like getting mistaken for Mexicans because they are Europeans not Latinos.

  10. johnny99 says:

First of all people from Peru, Cuba, Argentina, or Puerto Rico are not Spanish. Spanish= Spain= Nationality.

Mexico has a negative connotation in the U.S.A. and there are a lot of negative stereotypes about Mexican-Americans. I don’t know what there is to be offended about when Mexico has the 12th largest economy worldwide. It’s in better shape financially than Argentina, Cuba, and third world Peru. Mexico is one of the few global powers in Latin-America.

If there were a Latin-American hierarchy it would be:
    Argentina
    French Guiana
    Uruguay
    Costa Rica
    Chile
    Brazil
    Mexico
    Colombia
    Venezuela

Those are the only countries in Latin-America that are upper to lower Middle Income class countries. The rest are poor as dirt! No joke!!

Congratulations! You have just made the most ignorant statement i have ever seen on yahoo. Mexico is actually the richest country in latin america the rest of latin america is envious of Mexico. Mexico has one of the highset standard of living in all of latin america and people from south america frequently emmigrate TO MEXICO for a chance at a better life. oh and Peru is so bad economically that it makes Mexico look like the U.S.

  12. joel says:

well Mexicans are really proud of what they are
    I mean Mexico has everything
    Chinese,Spanish.Argentine, Korean etc…
I don’t get why they get mad
Mexico is the same as any other country

  13. It's VAL - babe♄ says:

Well I know Mexicans that get really pissed off if they are confused for Spaniards or any other latin american nationality whatsoever

  14. Dr. Ernest J Folk says:

because of the stereotype that all mexicans are lazy and criminals. when in reality not all mexicans are bad, the media just focuses on the bad ones causing most caucasians to fear all mexicans.
